2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their popularity has noticeably increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming seems particularly powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.
A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.
When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
