Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, including a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
