United Nations Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip next week.
He became provisional head of state subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that drove out the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding thirteen long years of domestic strife.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of global extremist entities this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday comes after US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met on their first occasion this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.
Following that encounter, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country before he cut connections in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting will not be his initial visit to the United States during this period. In September, he made history as the initial Syrian president to address the United Nations gathering in New York for nearly six decades.
In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
